چکیده

Empirical studies suggest that (a) language is grounded in action and (b) that the immediate past history of use influences how humans produce and comprehend spatial prepositions. We put these assumptions to the test by computationally modelling data from a spatial language task. The task required participants to place functionally related/unrelated objects on a screen w.r.t to a spatial preposition. Across participants, the amount of experience with placing objects was varied. The employed model was a variant of the dynamic field theory model that has successfully been applied to the A-not-B error task (Thelen et al., 2001). Since previous actions are an integral part of the representations in the original model, applying it to the spatial language data allowed testing the mechanisms underlying the (change of the) meaning of spatial prepositions. Yielding a tight fit, simulations support the idea that the meaning of spatial prepositions is dynamically grounded in actions.

A Reflection on Kristeva's Approach to the Structure of Language

Reaching out to history and subject in terms of meaning variation, Kristeva could show that language cannot simply be a Saussurean sign system. Rather, she went on to delineate that language, beyond signs, is associated with a dynamic system of signification where the ''speaking subject'' is constantly involved in processing. Julia Kristeva, a French critic, psychoanalyst, theoretician, a post-...

Book Review: "Learning Strategy Instruction in the Language Classroom: Issues and Implementation"

Language learning strategies, “the techniques or devices which a learner may use to acquire knowledge” (Rubin, 1975, p. 43) or more pertinently “complex, dynamic thoughts and actions, selected and used by learners with some degree of consciousness in specific contexts” (Oxford, 2017, p. 48), have been widely researched and discussed for more than forty years since the mid-1970s. Shifting the fo...

Dynamic Assessment: From Underlying Constructs to Implications for Language Teaching

Testing as a general trait of social life has received a great deal of attention by many language teachers and scholars. Throughout history, people have been tested to prove their abilities and experiences or to confirm their capacities. Many authorities have said that assessment and instruction should be integrated as a single and inseparable activity which seeks to understand development by a...

Mirror Neurons and (Inter)subjectivity: Typological Evidence from East Asian Languages

Language is primarily constituted by action and interaction based on sensorimotor information. This paper demonstrates the nature of subjectivity and intersubjectivity through the neural mechanism and typological evidence of sentence-final particles from East Asian languages and extends to the discussion of the relationship between them. I propose that intersubjecivity is a kind of embedded or ...
